What Sosúa is like

Sosúa is a town in Puerto Plata province built around a calm bay that is good for swimming and snorkelling. Its history is unusual: in 1940 Jewish refugees fleeing Europe settled here, and the synagogue and the town's dairy tradition remain from that time.

Today it has a large foreign community, mainly North American and European, living here year-round or for the winter. Cabarete, world-famous for kitesurfing, is part of the same municipality, and between the two lies Playa Encuentro, the area's surf beach.

Who it suits

Retirees and remote workers from abroad, buyers who want a beach home close to direct flights, and investors renting to holidaymakers by the season. Kiters and surfers usually look further east, towards Cabarete.

Getting there

Gregorio Luperón International Airport (POP) is about 10-20 minutes from central Sosúa, with direct flights from the United States and Canada. Puerto Plata city lies to the west along the coast road, and Cabarete about 15 minutes to the east.

What to check before you buy

The market mixes condos in town, villas in gated hillside communities such as Sosúa Ocean Village, and new projects along the road to Cabarete. Ask what the community fee covers (security, common areas, road upkeep) and whether short-term rentals are allowed.

If the project has Confotur status, buyers may be exempt from the transfer tax and the annual property tax (IPI) for the classification period; ask for the resolution and have your lawyer check the benefit still stands.
